As part of our Neighbourhood Learning Summer School 2026, join us for a thrilling and thoroughly entertaining evening at Holbrook Manor. We'll begin with a delicious two-course dinner before settling in for a talk that is guaranteed to make you think twice about your next hiking holiday!
What happens when the Earth decides to remind you who is really in charge? John Highnam knows first hand — having witnessed an eruption at Mount Ngauruhoe in New Zealand, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. And he lived to tell the tale.
In this gripping and wonderfully personal account, John takes us on a journey into the extraordinary world of volcanoes — from the dramatic spectacle of erupting planetary vents to the quietly sinister creep of gas extrusions that have shaped, and sometimes ended, human existence across the centuries. Along the way he explores the remarkable variety of volcanic activity found across our planet, and asks a question that is as fascinating as it is unsettling — is the Earth itself alive?
By turns awe-inspiring, humbling and unexpectedly funny, this is an evening that will leave you looking at the ground beneath your feet in a whole new way. Oh, and the title? That's advice John maybe wishes someone had given him a little sooner.
A spectacular dinner, a gripping story, and a planet that refuses to sit still. What more could you ask for on a summer's evening?

Raised in rural Dorset by farming and business-minded parents, John developed a lifelong passion for the natural world and environmental causes. His curiosity took him across the world, including an formative period living in New Zealand, before he eventually settled in Somerset. Now retired from a long career in SME leadership, he channels his wealth of experience into engaging personal talks and presentations that audiences find both stimulating and entertaining.
