"Play it once, Sam; for old times' sake…"
It's one of cinema's most iconic moments — and we instinctively understand exactly how Ilsa feels. Because music has an almost uncanny power to transport us: a wisp of melody, a single chord, and we're somewhere else entirely. A forgotten summer. A face we once loved. A moment we thought we'd lost forever.
In this richly illustrated workshop, music historian Gwyn Parry-Jones explores how composers have harnessed that extraordinary evocative power across the centuries — whether through the intimacy of the human voice, the expressive warmth of the piano, or the vast, spectacular palette of the symphony orchestra. From the delicate beauty of early keyboard music to the breathtaking musical imagery of Tchaikovsky and Debussy, Gwyn draws on a wonderful range of audio and video recordings to bring this fascinating phenomenon to life.
Prepare to listen differently — and to be moved in ways you might not expect.
