As part of our Neighbourhood Learning Summer School 2026, join social historian Alan Lascelles for this fascinating exploration of the Festival of Britain — the remarkable nationwide celebration that lifted the spirits of a country still bearing the scars of war.
In the grey austerity of post-war Britain, something extraordinary happened. In 1951, the nation threw itself a party — and what a party it was.
Far more than just the iconic South Bank site and the pleasure grounds of Battersea Park, the Festival reached into cities, towns and villages the length and breadth of the British Isles — a joyful, defiant showcase of British scientific, artistic and cultural talent.
Along the way, we'll cast an eye back to its great predecessor, the 1851 Great Exhibition and the legendary Crystal Palace, before tracing the Festival's extraordinary legacy — from the enduring elegance of the Royal Festival Hall to its lasting influence on British design, architecture and national identity.
Optimistic, inventive, and irrepressibly British — the Festival of Britain was a defining moment in the life of a nation. Come and find out why it still matters today.
