Bring Me Sunshine: A Summary of Some Summery Themes in Art

  • Holbrook Manor Wincanton, England, BA9 8BS United Kingdom (map)

As part of a series of evening lectures for our Neighbourhood Learning Summer School 2026, join us for a beautiful evening at the stunning Holbrook Manor — where a delicious dinner and a captivating lecture combine for a memorable night.

What is it about summer that has enchanted artists for centuries? The glint of light on water, the languorous heat of a perfect afternoon, the irresistible pull of the outdoors — these are sensations that painters have chased and captured across four hundred years.

In this fascinating new talk, art historian Richard Kay traces that golden thread, from the luminous landscapes of Aelbert Cuyp to the sun-drenched boldness of David Hockney, taking in Jean-François Millet, Eugène Boudin, James Tissot, Dame Laura Knight, Roger Hilton and many more along the way.

But before the paintings take centre stage, we'll sit down together to enjoy a delicious two-course evening meal, freshly prepared by the team at Holbrook Manor using the finest local, seasonal ingredients — the perfect overture to the evening ahead.

Art, food, and the long golden days of summer. We can't think of a better way to spend an evening.
