St. Ives August 1928. One of the greatest meetings in 20th Century British art. Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood passed an open door in Back Road West and saw humble paintings by retired fisherman Alfred Wallis, who had only turned to art in his 70s after his wife died. Earlier that year, Nicholson, Wood and Winifred Nicholson had painted together in Cumbria in a naïve style, inspiration flowing freely from one to another. In an amazing coincidence, Wallis’s work provided vindication for these trained artists. Individually and together, we look at the fabulous art of Wood, Wallis and the Nicholsons throughout their careers with art historian Dr Jan Cox.
