An Introduction to Indian Block Printing

  • Holbrook Manor Wincanton, England, BA9 8BS United Kingdom (map)

Join us and learn about the traditional craft of Indian Block Printing with wonderful artist Clare Walsh — no prior experience required!

We will begin by exploring a selection of beautiful, hand-carved wooden printing blocks and printed fabric samples. Using photographs and visual references, Clare will introduce the rich history of block printing in India and explain the traditional techniques involved, from carving the blocks to preparing the dyes and creating repeating motifs. After a demonstration of the printing method, you will have the opportunity to experiment for yourself on paper, trying out different blocks and considering how repeat patterns, colour choices, layout and the combination of shapes can transform a simple motif into a striking design.

After lunch, we will turn our attention to design placement and composition. By looking closely at examples of Indian textiles, you will gain insight into how artisans plan borders, central motifs and all-over patterns. You will then choose your favourite blocks to create a personalised design on a bag, tea towel or linen square — a finished piece to take home, use and enjoy. This workshop offers a relaxed and inspiring introduction to a timeless craft, allowing you to develop your own creative approach while learning about a fascinating artistic tradition.

Our home for the day will be the wonderful Holbrook Manor, a graceful Georgian house set in the peaceful Somerset countryside near Wincanton. Effortlessly combining heritage, comfort, and tranquillity, you’ll immediately feel at home. With a 2-course lunch included and refreshments at breaktimes prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, we’ve certainly got your appetite for both delicious food and learning covered!
