Back in the 19th century, the famous conductor Hans von Bülow said, with the utmost confidence, “there never will be a woman composer”. His views were remarkably commonly held, even by great thinkers such as philosopher Immanuel Kant.
Fast forward to last Summer’s BBC Proms; there were no less than nineteen compositions by women featured, in a season of some sixty concerts. Certainly a big change! How has this come about, and why has it taken so long? These questions and many more are ones we shall consider in this course with Gwyn Parry-Jones celebrating the wonderful music created by women, which despite being often cruelly suppressed, is now gaining the recognition it deserves.
