Tragedy and Triumph : The Story of Polar Exploration
Join us for a relaxing residential stay in the stunning setting of Haselbury Mill for a fascinating course, some delicious locally-sourced food and a truly home-from-home atmosphere. Our tutor, Mark Cottle, will be leading a voyage of discovery through one of the most compelling, and at times unbelievable, chapters in world exploration as he takes a deep dive in to the history of Polar exploration.
During this course we will start with the search for the North-West Passage which had captivated the imaginations of explorers, merchants and adventurers as far back as the journeys of Frobisher and Davis, in Elizabeth I’s reign. We will then move on to look at the discoveries of both the North and South Poles with particular reference to the Norwegians, Nansen and Amundsen, and the British, Scott and Shackleton.
Their stories are remarkable: pitting leadership, courage, endurance and ingenuity against daunting hardships and threats. With the help of the evocative films and photographs of Scott’s photographer Herbert Ponting and Shackleton’s photographer Frank Hurley, together with some of Edward Wilson’s watercolours we will follow these sagas of survival against the odds.
